NDT: Non Destructive Testing
Ultrasonic testing (UT) is the name given to the NDT application of sound waves having frequencies higher than those that the human ear can hear. This energy is induced into a material without destroying them, and in many applications, can be performed while in service. Ultrasonic testing can be used to measure the thickness of a material for verification, corrosion mapping or to examine the internal structure of a material for possible discontinuities, such as voids or cracks.

Periodic and regulatory control
The most commonly used methods of Hardness testing in metals are, Vickers, Brinnel, Rockwell, and Microdur. Brinnel Vickers and Rockwell hardness testing are based on the indentation of a test material from an application of force. Microdur hardness testing measures the hardness of the material based on Ultrasonic Contact Impedance which measures the hardness value based on changes to the relative size of the micro indentation area.
Field Inspection of Work-over & Drilling Rig Mast, Substructure & Rig Tools
Liquid penetrate inspection is a non-destructive method for testing surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials. It is most commonly used for non-ferrous materials.
LPI is based upon capillary action, where low surface tension fluid penetrates into clean and dry surface breaking discontinuities. Penetrate may be applied to test components by dipping, spraying or brushing and can be either visible or florescent. After an adequate penetration time (dwell time) has been allowed, the excess penetrate may be carefully removed and a developer applied. The developer helps to draw penetrate out of the flaw so that indication becomes visible.
Tubular Inspection
Non Destructive Testing (NDT) is used to inspect the tubular. The inspector will look at high-stress areas, including threads, slip areas, weld areas and radius changes, to detect if any fatigue or cracks have occurred in the pipe. There is some inspection that can be done in the field, eg. visual and dimensional inspection, internal conditions of the pipes and hard-banding. To cover all methods,testing needs to be completed,in the yard as a line flow is required for the inspection to be cost effective.
Engineering
To determine the provision, suitability and security of guarding. To ascertain the mechanical and electrical integrity of installation. To identify any obvious signs of deterioration, damage or wear (i.e. leakage, excessive noise, vibration or heat)
